VMwareFusion Ubuntu

Notes:

  • already installed VMware Fusion 3.0.1
  • downloaded Ubuntu 9.1.0 as 64-bit .iso (Canada) into user's home ~/Downloads folder
    • this is a 724 Mb download
  • after downloading, be aware (via any open Finder window) that the .iso has likely been auto-mounted as a "drive"
    • unmount it (click the triangular "eject" symbol)… as it is the unmounted .iso that VMware Fusion will need
  • since we are not installing from a physical CD in any CD drive, in VMware Fusion click "Continue"
  • accept VMware Fusions' Easy Install option
    • if this machine file will reside only within a secure hard drive directory, or if it will contain no confidential data, you can provide it an easy account name and password (maybe even identical to your personal account name on your computer)
    • if you maintain sanitary computer practices, you may be no more likely to pick up malware in this VM as you are in your primary OS therefore it may be acceptable in Easy Install configuration to enable read/write access to your host home directory, this will make moving files & logs & screenshots easier

After installation:

  • you will be presented with the Ubuntu login screen
    • before logging in, consider if you would wish to make any adjustments e.g. to keyboard / country
  • upon logging in, Update Manager should open and reveal (e.g.) 124 Mb of updates to install
    • perform this installation
  • restart

Applications > Ubuntu Software Centre > type "gnumed", select gnumed-client, click right arrow, click "install" and gnumed will eventually appear under Applications > Office

Had a problem printing to my wireless (Apple Airport Extreme-shared) Lexmark USB printer… the Document Print Status says 'cups-insecure-filter' … maybe will try this solution. Unsure whether I should have to install VMware Tools.
